• Use universally accepted abbreviations when appropriate, but do not use abbreviations or acronyms that readers would not quickly recognize. A list of acronyms is included as an appen- dix in this guide. In most cases, it is best to spell out the word or words on first reference and use the appropriate abbrevia- tion or acronym on subsequent mentions. It is not necessary to list the abbreviation in parentheses after the first reference.
• Before a name: Abbreviate the following titles when used before a full name: Dr., Gov., Lt. Gov., Mr., Mrs., Rep., the Rev. and Sen.
• After a name: Abbreviate junior or senior after an individual’s name, but don’t precede it with a comma. Abbreviate compa- ny, corporation, incorporated and limited where used after a corporation name, but don’t set off the term with commas.
Official names
• Capitalize the school system’s official name, Brevard Public Schools. Variations of the name such as the Brevard County public school system, Brevard County school system or Brevard County school district are acceptable, but each word should not be capitalized.

• Brevard County public schools is correct when referring to all of the schools in the district.
All Brevard County public schools have guidance counselors.
• Capitalize the full name, School Board of Brevard County or Brevard County School Board.
The Brevard County School Board meets every second and fourth Tuesday.
• Lowercase school board or board if used without the county designation.
The school board will meet at 7 p.m. to discuss the new high school.
An academic degree may be abbreviated after an individual’s name. (See Academic Degrees in the Capitalization section.)
• In numbered addresses: Abbreviate avenue, boulevard and street in numbered addresses, but spell out road, circle, court, drive and others. Spell out all street references when a street number is not included:
Roy Allen Elementary is located at 2801 Fountainhead Blvd. in Melbourne.
Coquina Elementary is located at 850 Knox McRae Drive.
Eau Gallie High is located at the corner of Eau Gallie Boulevard and Commodore Boulevard.
      CAPITALIZATION
• Basic rule: When in doubt, don’t capitalize. • Capitalize Board Room when referring to the room
in which the Brevard County School Board meets.
• Capitalize a school’s full name, but lowercase elementary schools, middle schools, etc. if two or more schools are mentioned.
The meeting will be held at Melbourne High School.
Harbor City, Fairglen and Discovery elementary schools have portable classrooms.
Williams and Westside elementaries are two of the newest schools.
Governmental bodies
• Capitalize the full name of governmental departments, agencies and offices. Lowercase state if it is used in place of Florida.
The grants are funded by the Florida Department of Education and the U. S. Department of Education.
