Patrick Moore, John Thaw, Lynda La Plante, Ruth Caleb, Sir Michael Gambon, Dame Judi Dench, holding their own against the massed talent of the newer comers: Norton, Cohen, Theroux, Goodall, Kieran Prendiville (writer of best single drama Care.)
They, in turn, were out-pointing the likes of Tarrant, Robinson, Aherne, French, Wood, Schama, Merton and Bremner. Event compere Angus Deayton who generally had a good night driving the evening through with sharp - some felt wounding – wit failed to win the Entertainment Performance Award.
That went to an exuberant Graham Norton who couldn’t resist a dig at Deayton’s alleged £50,000 fee for the evening when he quipped: “Angus cer- tainly won the BAFTA cash prize this evening.”
The Unsung Prize should certainly go to the Academy’s Chief Executive Amanda Berry (12th Awards ceremony in a little over two years) and her team for another highly successful sell-out evening. ■ John Morrell
