Buckland Newton Place
The Reverend Fennell Fitzpatrick - Vicar
of the Holy Rood and Special Constable
Shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War the Reverend Fennell Fitzpatiick became the incumbent of the Holy Rood.
In his seventies by the time
he and his wife moved into the vicarage, Fennell Fitzpatrick had served his country as a Chaplain to the Forces during the First World War.
The 1939 Register for the Holy Rood Vicarage states that, at the age of 76, Fennell Fitzpatrick was still helping the war effort by serving as a Special Constable.
The Reverend Archibald Edward Hibberd - Vicar of the Holy Rood
In 1960 Archibald Edward Hibberd be- came the new vicar at the Holy Rood. Born in 1906 Archibald Edward Hibberd trained at Kelham Theological
College before becoming a clergyman in Lincolnshire and then Swindon.
During the SecondWorldWar he was the vicar of St Francis, Ashton Gate in Bristol and after the War he practiced at Hinton Parva.
Before moving to Buckland Newton Archibald Edward Hibberd was the vicar of the church at Two Mile Hill in Bristol.
On 26 January 1956 Buckland Newton Place becomes a Grade ll listed building

Bill to friends and Bison to his family, he was born on 24th August 1923 in Yorkshire and he attended Charterhouse, which he did not much enjoy. Before the war such places were still steeped in the ethos of Tom Brown’s Schooldays and did not encourage elegance and individuality.
After leaving school he joined the 5th Inniskilling Dragoon Guards. He served with the “Skins” with distinction, first on the social scene whilst training and then in Normandy just prior to his 21st birthday. He was now a Lieutenant, in charge of a group of four tanks. On those short sum- mer nights he slept in a trench beside his tank and was up from his sleeping bag at 2.30am in order to refuel and take on am- munition as a prelude to long hot dusty days of action as part of the relentless fight- ing that enabled the British army to achieve the all important break-out from the Normandy beachhead. His war contin- ued campaigning throughout France, Bel- gium, Holland and on into Germany.
