  THEBRITISHACADEMYCHILDREN’S FILM&TVAWARDS2000
This year, the British Academy Children’s Film & Television Awards came of age. We secured a major sponsor in the shape of the LEGO Company, registered a record number of entries (188 produc- tions) and attracted press atten- tion never previously dreamed of.
The London Hilton on Park Lane was packed to capacity on November 12 with industry heavyweights like Greg Dyke, Alan Yentob and Andrea Wonfor rubbing shoulders with the “glam” factor from the worlds of television, film, music and sport.
It was glitz all the way with
red carpet arrivals, seven cam-
era crews and 50 press mem-
bers competing for sound bites.
Spice Girl Emma Bunton co-
hosted with Live & Kicking’s
Ortis. They were joined in a
celebrity laden line-up including Olympic golden girl Denise
Lewis, popsters Louise Redknapp, Billie Piper and H from Steps; Billy Elliot’s young star, Jamie Bell; EastEnder’s Natalie Cassidy and Jack Ryder; Andrew Paul from The Bill and Aleetza Wood (Home & Away).
SClub7 performed their new single “Never Had A Dream Come True” recorded for Children In Need, but it was their second number “Reach” which had a surprising number of exec- utives dancing at their tables!
Co-hosts Ortis and Emma Bunton supply some added glamour
points, Helen enthused, “After the births of my two daughters, this is the best night of my life.” Katy Hill received the first ever Presenter’s Award, most notably for her five-year career on Blue Peter.
The big winner of the night was SMTV: Live which won two awards - Entertainment programme and The LEGO/BAFTA Kids’ Vote. Ant, Dec, Cat Deeley and the Blaze Television team were thrilled with both awards. The Kids’ Vote was decided by a jury of 16 chil- dren aged 8-14 who came to London for a weekend in October. SMTV were present- ed with a unique BAFTA mask made of LEGO bricks.
Blaze Television are pro- ducing a Best of Children’s Television programme for ITV which will feature nominated programmes and highlights
from the Awards. Transmission date to be confirmed but check your listings for Christmas week.
It wouldn’t be an Awards ceremo- ny without a thank you speech. My thanks go to our sponsor LEGO, Marc Baker (Producer), Donna Bell and Kelly Smith (BAFTA), John Richmond and the Children’s Committee for all their hard work and enthusiastic support of the most successful Children’s Awards to date. ■ Lisa Prime, CHILDREN’S AWARDS OFFICER
Greg Dyke paid tribute to the recipient of the Special Award, Anne Wood, as “a brilliant pro- gramme maker, an inspirational leader and a great talent.” Anne’s many credits include The
Book Tower, Ragdolly Anna, The Moomins, Tots TV, Rosie & Jim, Brum, Teletubbies but it was their time together at TVAM that provided the focus for Greg’s speech.
“When I was appointed Director of Programmes at LWT, The Sun ran a head- line saying ‘Roland Rat’s Dad gets top TV job.’ I hope someone tomorrow will run a headline ‘Roland Rat’s Mum gets top TV
Award,” he laughed.
Not one but two Writer’s
Awards were presented to cele- brate the remarkable achieve- ments of Richard Carpenter and Helen Cresswell. Whilst their careers have had many high-
