CALLING ALL
MEMBERS FROM AMY MINYARD BAFTA Events And Membership Officer
Having recently taken up the post of Events and Membership Officer at the Academy, I am excited about the range and quality of events that we have planned for the coming months. I have been at BAFTA for the past three years in the Corporate Events depart- ment, so I may not be a new face to many of you.
international news coverage, John Willis and many mem- bers of the audience chal- lenged the broadcasters on how these decisions are justi- fied when so much of the world’s news is not reported. Ron McCollough, Managing Director Insight News Television, opened the discus- sion with a provocative talk. Tony Maddox, Vice President and Managing Editor for Europe, Africa and the Middle East at CNN and David Lloyd, Head of News, Current Affairs and Business at Channel 4 dis- cussed the demands facing the broadcasters.

with Michael Attwell to achieve these goals. But we need your help as well, so please let us know what you want from BAFTA, what you are happy with and what you would like to see changed.
Working with Jill James and the Events Committee, I am keen to produce events that are compelling to mem- bers and their guests. So please let us know what inter- ests you. We plan to make the events programme more regu- lar and coherent, ensuring the events cover all areas of the Academy’s activities.
All films screened are done so for the purpose of qualify- ing for the film awards and subsequent voting, so we request that members and their guests remain seated until all credits have been shown and please respect oth- ers by not talking in the the- atre during the films.
Finally, please remember to turn off all mobile phones and that no food or drink is allowed in the theatre. Your understanding, co-operation and help will be greatly appre- ciated. Thank you.
My responsibilities will not end with the events, I will also be looking at ways to make BAFTA membership more valu- able to existing members and more attractive to potential ones. I will be working closely
In 2001 we plan to hold our first ever Children’s Lecture as well as a David Lean Lecture with Sydney Pollack early in the year. We also plan to launch new strands of events such as net- working evenings, advice ses- sions, and BAFTA tutorials.
Before moving on to tell you about the range of exciting events taking place at the Academy, may I gently raise a few housekeeping points. In my first few weeks in this role, I have unfortunately received sev- eral complaints from members about the behaviour of some in the Princess Anne Theatre.
RECENT EVENTS
WONDER BOYS
Michael Douglas and Curtis Hanson joined us for a preview screening of their new film Wonder Boys. Barry Norman was on hand to chair the event and the theatre was filled to capacity.
KICKSTART
This year we held our first
event as part of the London Film Festival pro-
gramme, and it was a resound- ing success. Duncan Kenworthy, Mike Leigh, Alan Parker and Michael Winner were all at BAFTA to discuss their beginnings, rise in the film industry, and ambitions for the future. At the recep- tion, all those lucky enough to attend we treated to Red Bull and vodka until late in the evening – certainly a kickstart to any late night plans!
