It seems that we have stirred some minor controversy amongst the film community by sealing an Anglo-US pact to ensure the full benefits of our pre-Oscar dating shift, the significance of which is apparent to anyone at the heart of the British Academy. In all of my previous incarnations as producer, distributor and exhibitor I have consistently, both publicly and privately, encouraged the development and growth of British and European independent production.
However, only a narrow-minded fantasist could foolishly discount the importance of the Hollywood studios and their
crucial distribution tentacles in the UK. Continued on page 6
