12 Larkfield Road becomes known as 11 Larkfield Road
In the mid 1890s the Richmond house that for nearly 15 years had been known as 12 Larkfield Road acquired its present day address of 11 Larkfield Road.
The Bruin family continued to live at and own 11 Larkfield Road up until 1905.The 1901 Census document shows Frederick and his wife Mary, with eldest son Walter Bruin now 16 years old and well employed as an assurance clerk. The 1901 document is evidence of the address change, with what was no.12 Larkfield Road now listed as no.11.
11 Larkfield Road was listed for auction as aVilla Residence and on Wednesday 17 June 1905, 11 Larkfield Road was auctioned at the Greyhound Hotel in Rich- mond with the rent set at 40 pounds per annum and with an estimated value of 45 pounds per annum.
The particulars described the house as a villa residence ‘Held on Lease for a term of 99 years from 24 June 1879 (75 years now unex- pired), at a Ground Rent of 6 pounds per annum’.
Early 20th Century
Sydney Flowers – Ironmonger
The winner of the 1905 auction for 11 Larkfield Road, Sydney Flowers, was born in the county of Bedfordshire circa 1861 and was an ironmonger by trade. He lived at his Richmond home with his wife Edith Jane (who was 15 years his junior) and their daughter Marjorie Mary Flowers.
The Flowers family went on to become long term residents of 11 Larkfield Road, living at their house for around half a century until the mid 1950s. Documents show that throughout this pe- riod Sydney Flowers also owned the property.
The 1911 Census document for 11 Larkfield Road stated that the house had a total of seven rooms at this point in history.The family had their own servant living on the premises, a 24 year old lady named Annie Carter.
