BAFTANEWSAND
Autumn is a season of change, but one thing that remains constant is the diversity and quality of BAFTA’s Events Programme.
OCTOBER EVENTS
MONDAY 2 OCTOBER
1900 - 2045, PRINCESS ANNE THEATRE
JAYA GANGA SCREENING
BAFTA held a very special screening of Jaya Ganga, the debut feature film from director Vijay Singh. The film was introduced by Vijay who stayed on to answer audience questions.
Jaya Ganga is a beautiful, lyrical film based on Hindu mythology and filmed at the source of the Ganges. It charts a writer’s journey from Paris to the holy city of Benares, in search of the meaning of life - yet inevitably involves reflection on his past and a voyage of self discovery. In Hindi and French with English subtitles, it has received dazzling reviews - the Daily Telegraph described it a ‘a magical and gorgeous looking first feature’ and we are hon- oured to have welcomed the writer/producer/director Vijay Singh to this special screening.

FILM IN CITIZENSHIP
This event in association with Film Education explored the extent to which film can contribute to an important part of children’s development.
Both primary and secondary school students need to develop an understanding of citizenship in today’s multiethnic and multicul- tural society. Citizenship Education enables teachers to deal effectively with the teaching of democracy, as well as the spiritual, moral, social and cultural develop- ment of pupils and society, thus enabling pupils to become informed citizens, to develop skills of enquiry and communication, and to develop skills for participa- tion and responsible action.
At this event a distinguished panel of film practitioners and educationalists debated the extent to which film can play a part in the school curriculum. Can film effectively illustrate to students the necessity of funda- mental human rights, fairness, freedom of speech, democracy, services and the law? A British Academy Event in association with Film Education.
