Hopefully the movie theaters in Sonoma County will open with the new six- feet-apart policy. Until then you have a lot to choose from at home.
Pinetop, Honeyboy, and Big Eyes
May 1st can be your movie binge day! Another amazing movie is “Sweet Bird of Youth” starring Paul Newman. It was released in 1962. Also on May 1st is “Cat On A Hot Tin Roof” starring Paul Newman. Both on TCM. Julia Roberts fans will want to see “Mystic Pizza” May 1st on the Sundance Channel (www.sundancetv.com). One of my favorite actors, Brian Dennehy recently passed away so to honor his acting talent watch “Cocoon” May 1st on TCM. May 1st can be your movie binge day!
During the years following World War II, the streets of most cities were alive with clubs attracting blues musicians and their fans from all over. Nearby train tracks were often the conduit for spreading the word, carrying with them new artists, and railroad workers with magical recordings.
Fans of Brad Pitt need to see “12 Monkeys” It was released in 1995 and Pitt was nominated for Best Supporting Actor.
It’s on TMC (Turner Classic Movies:: www.
tcm.com) May 2nd and throughout May.
Most of the people who played those songs and bought those records are gone now, taking with them a backstreet history of an old world where music still rises from the dust.
On May 2nd you can catch the brilliant Marlon Brando in “On the Waterfront” on TCM. Debbie Reynolds fans will want to see “Singin’ in the Rain” May 2nd on TCM and on May 3rd in “The Unsinkable Molly Brown”, also on TCM. On May 5th don’t miss “Zodiac” starring the amazing Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr and Mark Ruffalo. I can’t believe it’s been 13 years since that movie came out!
Traditional blues music cuts deeply into our culture. Born on plantations, back roads, freight trains, and the honky-tonk streets of Memphis and Chicago, it’s the song of the night, of the mean streets where men and women went to express their joy and pain.
Let’s spotlight the very talented
Reese Witherspoon. She has been
very busy this year. If you haven’t seen
“Big Little Lies”, you can binge both
seasons of this awesome show on HBO
(www.hbo.com). On Hulu (www.hulu.com)
you can see the first season of “Little Fires
Everywhere” also starring Kerry Washington. The best show on television!!! She also stars with Jennifer Aniston in “Morning Show” on Apple TV. Some of her best movies are on cable this month. “Election” is on Showtime (www. sho.com). “Legally Blonde 2“ is on Starz (www.starx.com). It also stars the fabulous Sally Field. “Water For Elephants” wasn’t seen by a lot of people but it’s worth seeing. You can see it on HBO.
The few who remain have become incongruous in the dizzying rush of current events. In today’s atmosphere of often antiseptic political correctness there is no longer a place for their smoky, brawling world, where definitions of manhood and womanhood were so different from popular notions of today. So be it.
The Tribeca Film Festival was cancelled but go to their website to see some amazing films. You will save money by not having to buy airfare or a hotel room. There will be definitely some original films if you’re tired of the same movies on Netflix or cable.
For my live theater fans, I present to you next season at 6th Street Playhouse. First we have “Pride and Prejudice”, directed by Jared Sakren.
It opens August 14th for four weeks. Then we have “9 to 5”, directed by Carl Jordan. It opens September 11th for five weeks. Next is “the Sound of Music”, directed by Jared Sakin. It opens November 20th for four weeks. Finally, is “Hair”, directed by Aja Gianola-Norris. It opens June 2021 for five weeks. Wow! Amazing shows to look forward to. These days such artists are given awards and plaques, belatedly, often posthumously. But the histories of traditional blues artists are largely
tales of great suffering. Most died early, brought down by the struggle to feed themselves and their families, or the hard life of the road and its easy temptations. Their money, stolen from them by promoters, producers, and record company hacks will never be returned.
But these people are the stuff of legends, though the location of their graves is often unknown.
One of my favorite actors is Matt Dillon. He is in a new movie called “Capone”. It also stars Tom Hardy. It premieres May 12th (my birthday) On Demand. You can also catch him in “Little Darlings” on Tubi (www. tubitv.com). This is also starring Kristy McNichol. It came out in 1980. A classic and fun to watch if you haven’t seen it since then. Another classic is “Liar’s Moon” which came out in 1981 (on Tubi). And “Green Book” which won Best Picture at the Academy Awards in 2018. It’s on Showtime.
