September is upon us:
Fall is in the air and we all need to be reminded that the rains are just around the corner, so it’s time to take advantage of our current weather and get to work on preparing for winter! Whether you own a business, residential home, renting or are camping, please remember whatever
September and October are the two most colorful months of the year. With Indian summer approaching we can look forward to a small stint of warm weather before the fall chill descends. I am looking forward to all the foliage turning yellow, orange and burgundy. A beautiful time of year.
Rio Nido’s Last Summer Hurrah:
Its been an eventful summer here. The last RNHOA event to close out the summer festivities is on Sunday Sept. 3rd for the Labor Day Chicken BBQ. We have many new residents in Rio Nido and more vacationers have been flocking here all summer. Guess the secret is out. Rio Nido IS the happening spot. A big shoutout goes to Douglas Misner Pres. of the RNHOA, Beverly Bird, John Colonico and the rest of the RNHOA members for bringing smiles to all who attend the summer picnics. Pee Wee Mini Golf will be closing and opening back up next Summer.
FRN had their Community member meeting on Sunday, August 20th. There were many topics under discussion. Also, members held a Community Cleanup day on Sunday, August 27th. Folks were out and about trimming vegetation where it has been overgrown and cleaning signs and fire hydrants. Thanks for making our community shine!
is outside on the ground, will end up in our river. Look around and pick up all hazardous material, garbage and yard waste that would be harmful to
our waters or clog the storm drains! Clean debris off of your roof, clean your gutters, set up your water barrels to catch rain water, cut back vegetation. Best to do it now and not get caught with overflowing gutters and drains. Also, school is back in session, so please remember to slow it down when driving and be aware of the kids waiting on the sides of the roads for the bus, walking or riding their bicycle to school.
Friends of Rio Nido (FRN):
There is still a lot of groovy activity happening in September for you to enjoy after you have completed your chores! Of course, we start off with Labor Day Weekend, which will be full of local barbeques and river fun. Wednesday the 6th at 6pm is the Russian River Chamber of Commerce Mixer which will be held at the Chamber office on the Plaza. Go check out the remodeled office and interact with your local business owners; you do not have to be a member to attend! Another groovy meeting that is open to the public is the Library Advisory Board Meeting which is held on the second Wednesday (13th) of the month. Get involved with your groovy community and bring your ideas to life!
National Night Out:
Always a very fun time. FRN brought out a nice spread of food and
Russian River Jazz and Blues Festival will be Sept. 9-10 and the
line- up is just incredible. It’s still not too late to purchase your tickets at russianriverfestivals.com. As always, it will be held at Johnson’s Beach, so expect a lot of traffic congestion and no parking in town. Go to Safeway by Friday and prepare to hunker down at home if you don’t plan on attending... Might be a good weekend to get those chores done! Don’t forget the Farmer’s Market is still being held behind Hubert’s Hall every Thursday from 3-7 for your fresh produce. If you decide to venture out and go the opposite direction of the festival crowd, head out to Jenner and go visit Juan and his family at el Tiburon. Located at the Jenner Inn, serving seafood, pasta and BBQ. Be sure to ask for the Peruvian fruit juice; it’s so refreshing!

Pet of the Month:
Sweet, mellow and
sensitive 7 year old Great
Dane Penny adores kitties
and longs to be friends
with them. But sadly, most
scurry away from her due
to her size and species. But,
not brave and adventurous
Uni the kitty. Penny and
Uni met when Uni’s family
moved here last year and it
was love at first sniff. Finally
a kitty that feels this big girls heart. Every afternoon, Penny walks from Mt. Jackson Trail to see her favorite gray Tabby on Canyon 3. From his perch, he runs toward her majestic frame with a sweet “meow” reserved only for Penny. They greet each other with warm kisses and nuzzles.
One of our grooviest, best kept secrets, according to Shirley Valley (remember Shirley’s Hair Salon for how many years in downtown Gville?), is the Guerneville Bible Church, located in the redwoods at 17290 Highway 116 (across from DuBrava), which has been a part of our community for over 50 years! After Pastor Jenkins, who served a Pastor for over 20 years retired, a
few hardy souls kept the church going and now it’s a growing congregation that wants to be a part of our community once again. Go and check them out on Sundays at 11am. Or you can view their website at GuernevilleBibleChurch. com or facebook page Guerneville Bible Church.
