September is an amazing month to go to the movies. I’ve selected 10
films you have to se in the theater and not at home. First is “Stronger” starring Jake Gyllenhaal. It’s based on the memoir by Jeff Bauman, a Costco employee whose legs were blown off in the 2013 Boston Marathon
Jake Gyllenhaul in “Stronger”.
bombing. It opens September 22nd
and Gyllenhaal might finally win his Oscar. Next is “Flatliners” starring Oscar-nominated Ellen Page and Nina Dobrev. Inspired by Joel Schumacher’s 1990 film of the same name, this film depicts an ambitious group of med students, led by Page, trying to answer the question, What happens when we die? The original starred Julia Roberts and was fun but this version looks
intense and definitely worth seeing in the theater. It opens September 29th. The third movie I recommend is “Mother!” starring Oscar winners Jennifer
Lawrence and Michelle Pfeiffer, and directed by the very talented Darren Aronofsky. It centers on a married couple, Lawrence and Javier Bardem, whose relationship is tested when another couple, Pfeiffer and Ed Harris, visits. Opens September 15th. Next is “Battle of the Sexes” starring recent Oscar
winner Emma Stone and Steve Carell. They play Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. It’s the story of when they took to the tennis court in 1973 for an intense duel of sport, spectacle and gender equality. Opens September 22nd.
She falls into a relationship with an aspiring filmmaker in his late 20’s. Opens September 8th. The 7th movie is “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” starring Oscar winner Colin Firth and Taron Egerton. This is the sequel to the surprise hit “Kingsman: The Secret Service”. Opens September 22nd. Next is “Victoria & Abdul” starring Oscar winner Judi Dench. In 1997, Dench appeared in “Mrs. Brown” playing Queen Victoria and 20 years later she’s playing Victoria again. Opens September 22nd. The 9th movie is “Rebel in the Rye”. This movie is about famous author J.D. Salinger and his creative process behind writing “The Catcher in the Rye”. Opens September 8th. The 10th movie is “American Assassin” starring Michael Keaton and Dylan O’Brien. O’Brien plays an assasin looking for revenge. Opens September 15th. Now you can’t say there isn’t anything worthwhile playing in the theater!
For my live theater fans there’s “Chicago” at Napa’s Lucky Penny Theater. Set in the legendary city during the roaring “jazz hot” 20s, “Chicago” tells
the story of two rival vaudevillian murderesses locked up in Cook County
Jail. Runs from September 8th through September 24th. Directed by the very talented Taylor Bartolucci and Barry Martin. Call 707 266-6305 to purchase tickets. The talented John Craven directs “Grace” at the Main Stage West in Sebastopol. Runs from September 8th through September 24th. Main Stage West specializes in theater in an intimate setting.
