Through the Lens and Pen: A Father and Son’s Reverence of Nature
COAST cont’d from page 8
The tools we have to protect the coast and guarantee access to the beach began with “The Coastal Initiative”, Proposition 20, which was on the statewide ballot in 1972. Prop 20 passed by a statewide vote of 55.1% YES and 44.9% NO. The campaign battle was fierce and costly. But in the end Californian’s stepped up and Prop 20 became law. Implementation was an arduous undertaking which involved numerous lawsuits and much political tension. More on that in a future issue.
A closer look at the vote is interesting.
Remarkably many Republican elected officials supported the initiative (see the political ad “Visit the Original Sunset Strip”) including then Mayor of San Diego and future Governor Pete Wilson. Other interesting groups in support included the PTA and the League of Women Voters.

available in November. The book is a collaboration by photographer
Tracy Rose and his father and writer Fred Rose. It is a dual dialog of photographs and poetic reflections that delve into the solace that nature brings. The love of nature was instilled in Tracy at a very early age as his family spent so much of their time outdoors, camping and hiking in the natural environment. Feeling most comfortable in the wilderness, Tracy’s life of wanderlust and nature expeditions continue to unfold and are shared in his graceful photography.

YES and 45.2% NO. All coastal counties delivered a YES vote except the counties north of Sonoma (the NO vote in each was Mendocino 64.8%, Humboldt 64.2% and Del Norte a whopping NO vote of 82.5%).
The two top YES counties were inland, Yolo (YES 70.4%) and Sacramento (YES 63.8%). The two most opposed were Del Norte at 82.5% NO and in second place Kern with a NO vote of 66.8%.
So, the point is, a whole bunch of people from throughout the state worked very hard to see that the coast was protected. It is our duty to carry that work

His father, Fred Rose, worked as a freelance writer in the
early 1970s, providing feature articles for regional publications and several national magazines. In 1978, as a full-time freelancer, he began working
with several advertising and public relations agencies serving the business- to-business marketing communications needs of high-tech Silicon Valley companies. From his home office first, in the Santa Cruz area and later in the Sierra foothills, he worked with more than 50 companies, writing copy for a wide variety of marcom projects.

The father and son together marry words of the heart and the alluring beauty of nature to create this inspirational book “Beyond the View”.
Beyond the View will be available in November on Tracy’s photography website at tracyrosephotography.com, art shows he participates in, and some local stores. A limited-edition of prints will also be available soon.
