   Racism Rules Roseland
 Trunk or Treat
Some Roseland residents, and other supporters of Roseland, have told Roseland Review they believe racism rules Roseland. They wish to remain anonymous, but I believe they are correct so I stand behind this forum for their views to be aired and shared here. First, here is some good news to share before going deeper into that story. This month’s column reminds readers of “Make a Difference Day” to be held on Saturday October 27th in Roseland at the Roseland Neighbor Wood. Hosted by the Burbank Ave. Neighborhood Association, the Community Benefit Initiative of the Community Action Partnership and the Hughes Ave. Neighborhood Association along with members of Roseland Action as well as the Southwest Health Action Team there will be food and fun for volunteers.
Junk in the trunk takes on new meaning at KBBF’s annual Trunk or Treat fiesta. You’ll get your fill of Halloween candy as well as eye candy when the station’s parking lot is taken over by classic tricked-out lowriders, rat rods, and viclas carrying sweet treats. Children of all ages can go from car to car for Halloween goodies starting at 3pm. Costumes are optional.
Meet at Roseland Neighbor Wood at 10 am where there will be people enjoying the nature preserve as well as helping to keep it clean. This is across the street from Roseland Creek Elementary School on Burbank Ave. There will be refreshments and after 12 noon folks often go their separate ways to help in other parts of Roseland.
Last year’s stars of the show included a gorgeous ‘63 Chevy Impala and a rare early ‘50s Mercury Straight 8. All vehicles get decorated for the season, with spooky interiors and haunted trunk dioramas of ghosts, ghouls, zombies, Calaveras, y mucho más monsters. Some drivers get into the spirit by hooking up their rides with light shows and playing creepy music. The most original designs are awarded trophies.
This is an especially important time of year to help in the NeighborWood as there may be another good rainy season coming our way. If the area is cleaned well, there is less chance for pollution of Roseland Creek, and the Russian River. The first big rain of the season usually washes debris out into the Laguna de Santa Rosa and then into the Russian River. If we are able to keep Roseland Creek cleaner near the source of pollution the River will be better off for our efforts. Please come out to the Roseland Creek Elementary School at 10 am
on Saturday October 27 for Make a Difference Day and enjoy the Roseland Neighbor Wood with us.
Roll on by the station on October 20th, from 3pm-7pm. Avoid coming earlier because it will interrupt the preparation.
Food for sale, music, and performances are also on the bill. It all goes down at 1700 Corby Avenue, Santa Rosa.
Last month Roseland Review mentioned the unsung heroes doing good things for Roseland. One of the people is now known to us as Annette who cleans
up the vacant lots on Hearn Ave. across from Southwest Community Park at the end of Burbank Ave. Thank you kindly Miss Annette for all you do to help Roseland be a better place. Now back to the attention grabbing headline.
Commemoration of the Sonoma County Fires
KBBF and KRCB invite the public to a free gathering on October 2nd that commemorates last October’s fires. If you were affected by the fires or would like to tell your story during the event, call the organizers at 545-8833. You
can opt for us to record your voice or to speak directly to the audience. The proceedings kick off at 6pm with food and live music. Then, starting at 7pm, KBBF will broadcast personal stories from audience members as well as volunteers from KBBF. There will also be a viewing of a special television report by KRCB. Come to the station, at 1700 Corby Avenue, to participate.
On August 18th, KBBF was the site of the Lowrider Council of Sonoma County’s fundraising show. Several hundred folks showed up to check out over 40 classic cars. Here’s a shout out to all the volunteers who made it possible. This includes Mr. Chuch, who did live broadcasting of the event for KBBF. You can hear his program, “La Voz Chicana,” on KBBF every Saturday, 11am-1pm.
Racist rulers of Santa Rosa, and now all of Roseland, have kept the people of Roseland from being able to have a voice in the city decision-making process for many decades. Now the rulers have gone so far as to keep Roseland residents from having a vote in this November’s election for city council. Roseland is out of the vote until 2020 when the current council members have decided to allow Roseland residents to be able to vote. The current folks up for election this time around also decided to keep South Park out of the vote until 2020 thus making the new Roseland and South Park “District 1” the last to have any power. The areas of the city with the most people of color will be marginalized as usual, even though the Districts were supposedly formed to give the underrepresented people of color in Santa Rosa better representation in city government.
Awards and Accolades
Juan Roman, a Lowrider Council promoter, the DJ of the “Late Night Oldies Show” (on KBBF Sundays from 10pm to midnight), and the pilot of a ’52 Chevy Business Coupe had this to say about the goings-on: “This was the music that came to us through generations. We listen to this music because it’s like the soundtracks of our lives, from when you fall in love, when you have your heart broken, to the daily struggles in life and society.”
Long time voters in both Roseland and South Park which make up District
1 have not really won anything with this new District. Time to “hurry up and wait” for 2020 to have any chance to influence their future while the “Big” decisions for Santa Rosa’s future will have already been made in the next two years before 2020. With this in mind, Roseland Review offers up this opinion to those Santa Rosa residents who will be voting in the November elections.
Congratulations go out to Michaele Morales and Alfredo Sanchez. They were awarded the first ever Barrio Warrior Award, bestowed by the Council, in honor of their years of community service.
Vote No, N & O, No. Vote No on all the measures and propositions except the County Parks measure. The sales tax increase for parks from the small amount of tax increment from your one dollar purchases would not come back to you anyway. Businesses round up the amount of the money your purchase is taxed. At 8.35 cents or 8.65 cents now depending where you shop the round up to 9 cents already happens on a dollar purchase. That small increment could help everyone in the county with better parks if the sales tax increase was directed to County Parks.

Also in Santa Rosa vote out the incumbents and bring back Lee Pierce a good man and an Army Veteran who will listen to people from Roseland and South Park as he previously did while on the Santa Rosa City Council in the past.
For the best thing for Roseland a woman named Mary Watts who works for Community Action Partnership could be our best bet. We don’t get to vote for her, but you could tell your friends about her. Lee Pierce and Mary Watts know about Roseland. They will help Roseland if elected so please spread the word so we can try to have a better Roseland sooner than later.
