Dear Readers,
Every time Art Trails or Art at the Source comes around, I devote space in the Gazette to encouraging readers to go visit artists in their studios. When my friend Su and I went to Sonoma, we spent time LaHaye Art Center (page 23) and I got lost taking photos of art-in-the-making. Metal. Fabric. Paint. Tables strewn with tools used for projects under way. When I graduated from high school I enrolled in Tyler School of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Classes opened possibilities in mediums most of us had never had the opportunity to try. It was wonderful to indulge in creative pursuits every day.
Part of what I have learned over the years is that some people - the real artists, musicians, writers, etc. , have no choice about whether they do their art or not. They simply have to. Other creative people get side-tracked with life’s responsibilities, relationships, etc. Artists are impelled to create. It’s like breathing for them...necessary for life.
For our cover this month I chose one of those artists. Timothy David Dixon is remarkably prolific. I wanted brilliant colors for our cover and he came through. His whole world is color. His house is painted a brilliant orange and blue. His car is sunshine yellow. He can’t help himself...he simply has to create.
Timothy’s studio is not on Art Trails....no parking...but his work is available to see. Sabina at Art & Soul in Sebastopol agreed to feature Timothy’s paintings in her window display at 156 N. Main St, Sebastopol. Woodenhead Tasting Room at 5700 River Road between Fulton and Forestville has Tim’s paintings on the wall. He’s one of the artists at Hand Goods in Occidental, and Creekside Cafe in Boyes Springs, decorates their walls with his paintings. You can make an appointment to see his work at 707-939-9869, and look him up on Facebook and on his website at timothydaviddixon.com.
In the mean time, I wanted to stay light this month, so although we have plenty of issues to read about, this issue is mostly featherweight.
And for all the people who say, I’d love to meet you, please come see me dance at Raven Performing Arts on November 2nd and 4th. It’s a fund raiser and I’m sticking my neck out where I don’t belong, so come watch me try my hand at something out of my wheelhouse.
