Some vineyards nearby were harvesting early while wildfires farther north were raging. When I walked out under the branches of our Great Tree one morning, the air was filled with the unusual combination of the smell of smoke and grape must. Even though I
In August, 2017, having purchased one of Cloverdale’s landmark restaurants, Monique Hernandez-Evans (an experienced businesswomen who’d worked there over the years) and husband, Jeff Evans, renamed it...slightly.
MoE’s Eagle’s Nest Deli, LLC blends its traditions of great prices, “from scratch” recipes (like its pesto-mayo), generous portions and high-quality sandwiches, salads, and burgers (try the signature Black Bart Burger!) that helped make this family-friendly eaterie so popular among residents and visitors with its new name sake’s personal touch in delicious menu innovations (such as the Island Burger) and enhanced features (including lunchbox catering). Add in a customer-focused staff, a welcoming atmosphere, and a menu offering enough personal choices to satisfy almost any diet, taste buds or pocketbook and it’s easy to see how that landmark status will be preserved and even enhanced. 113 No. Cloverdale Blvd; 894-9290; Mon.-Thurs., 9-4; Fri., 9-9; Sat., 9-7; Sun., 9-4. Plus: Fri.& Sat. “Happy Hour”, 5-7pm; Breakfast daily, 9-11:30 a.m. Don’t forget to use the Sandwich Card: Buy 10 deli sandwiches and the 11th is free! Buy 50, get a $25 gift certificate!
don’t welcome the smell of smoke for since our own close call last month, this combination was pleasant. It smelled like what you might find as a trendy new appetizer -or dessert- from one of our local restaurants. And on the hillsides, while the eclipse was a bit of a no-show, the reddish clouds and the different color of the glow on the grass covered hillsides provides
a bit of the same other-worldly feeling as the sun sets beyond the western hills.
It’s also time to think of Harvest Festivals, which are held at a number
of wineries in Sonoma County. Some of them are for charity, some are just
a nominal cost, but all of them are a great way to celebrate what is still Sonoma County’s signature product – wine. The Sonoma County Harvest Fair takes place at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds Friday, October 6th through Sunday, October 8th. Nearer to Geyserville, Kendall Jackson offers their first-ever harvest festival on October 1st, benefiting the UC Master Gardener Program of Sonoma County. Geyserville’s own Pedroncelli offers a special end-of-harvest dinner to its Club Ped members.
Transporation for Senors: Getting to medical/social services appointments, shopping, and, equally important, social/family visits can be very difficult for seniors and the disabled. Cloverdale Senior Center has found a way to resolve this problem with the help of Elizabeth Reynaldo, Transportation Coordinator, who also acts as an intergenerational connection for the seniors.
Foodie Moment of the Month
If you are a member of the Senior Center, which costs $15 per year, or disabled, a transportation program has been created, whereby, you call the center (preferably with 3-5 days notice) and either Mr. Taxi or a volunteer is dispatched to pick you up and take you to your destination, even to Santa Rosa. They will wait and return you home. All for free. More info: (707) 894-4826 or cloverdaleseniorcenter.com
Fans of Noble Folk’s ice cream in Healdsburg don’t have to travel
quite so far. On my latest outing to Catelli’s here in beautiful downtown Geyserville, I was delighted to discover that it’s Noble Folk that puts the “Noble” into Catelli’s sundae. Even better, it comes in two forms, the standard Noble Sundae and the Mini-Noble. Even the mini seemed a little big for me when it arrived at the table, but, oddly enough, I found myself finishing it off completely. While fancy and trendy desserts have their place, sometimes all you want is an old-fashioned chocolate sundae. It felt like I was making a proper goodbye to ice-cream season as the days finally cool and the autumn breezes shake loose the leaves and needles from the trees.

And there is just time to remind everyone of Geyserville’s own Beer, Wine, and Spirits Festival coming up on Saturday, October 7th at
the Geyserville Inn. The event is put on by the Geyserville Lodging Association and a portion of the proceeds benefit the Geyserville Education Fund. It is a great way to be introduced to some of the great
local breweries, wineries, and distilleries. Tickets are $45 at Eventbrite,
and attending vendors may also have discount codes available, so if you’re already a fan one of the breweries or wineries, you may want to check in with them before you purchase your ticket. For the procrastinators among us, some tickets may be available at the event if it doesn’t sell out. The tasting runs from noon until four at the Geyserville Inn at 21714 Geyserville Avenue.
Local Festivities & Fundraisers: You can go from the Friends’ Book Sale
on Saturday the 7th to the downtown plaza and have some fun at Cloverdale’s annual Oktoberfest. This seasonal tradition finds a true German food fair with bratwurst, sauerkraut, potato salad, apple crisp, and beer and wine tasting for your pallet’s enjoyment plus live music with fun activities for the whole family to carry you through the day. 12 – 8pm
Have more about Geyserville to share? Let me know at the email above.
A week later, October 14th takes you from books to the outdoors, bicycling across the beautiful Northern Sonoma County countryside in a 25K, 50K or 100K ride with the Asti Tour de Vine. This Rotary Club fundraiser supports the Rotary student scholarship program in Cloverdale as well as other local and international programs. Finish the ride at a wonderful luncheon provided by the Rotary. Guests are welcome. More info: astitourdevine.com/

On October 22nd, the Vineyard Races give runners and walkers a chance to cross through the vineyards on groomed roads in the natural beauty of Sonoma County. The Cloverdale Kiwanis use the funds from this race to support the partnership between Cloverdale and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. These races make it possible for children under five in Cloverdale to enrich their imagination with a book mailed to them each month. Take some time to relax during the following week, October 19-22nd. Enjoy the Alexander Valley Film Festival, watching movies such as The Square,
Faces Places, and Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin shown at The Clover and
The Raven theaters. “The Alexander Valley Film Society (AVFS) strengthens our community by captivating and engaging audiences...providing access and educational opportunities in the media arts, and celebrating our collective humanity through year-round educational and cultural enrichment programs...” Bringing film to our local students is an important part of the AVFS’s with classes conducted by active members of the film community. The Festival provides the means to coordinate these classes. Info: avfilmsociety.org
