9.12. Walk-in Clients Performing Archival Research
A total of 45 walk-in researchers conducted primary research in the Archival Collections during 81 separate visits in the course of 2016. Nine of these were overseas researchers (3 from the USA, 2 from the UK, 1 from the Netherlands and Germany each). From Africa, the Library serviced two clients; each one from Mozambique and Nigeria.
Of the 45 researchers, a total of 16 used the Archives for completing Masters and PhD theses and/or dissertations; 28 researchers visited the Archives to conduct research for the purpose of writing an article, book or compiling a documentary.
Some of the topics of research included the following themes:
Medicines and medical practices in Namibia
Transcribing Tsonga music from the Marivate Papers
Nazi broadcasts to South Africa and South African public diplomacy
Fictional world and characters in Fook Island (Sir Walter Battiss)
British Imperial History of Indians
Coloured Drama and Theatre in Gauteng

The United Party Archives (23), followed by the Documentation Centre for African Studies (20) and the Manuscript Collection (16) are the most frequently consulted collections.
