5 More on む-forms: A む-form leads to another verb.
As mentioned before, む-form is tenseless, and it is used to string together sequences of verbs. In this sense, む-form functions like an ‘and’ between different actions. Only the last verb in each sequence is tensed in Japanese, but the tense is transferred from the last verb to the verb in む-form. Note English translations of む- form must reflect the appropriate tense information.
1. デΒパめひづぞぢぞてオ見む\ミセパッホハΜオぱぱべ〜 We watched a short movie in class, and then we had a discussion.
2. Γ【はカら\本オ買ぽむ\日本語オ勉強ぱび〜 Mr. Lee will buy a book and study Japanese.
3. ニ【ヨ【オべどはカ院カめ\ぱどぺぞオぱぱべ〜 I drank a lot of coffee and did homework.
4. ゾ【はカら\ヴ【ラΜ...ビΜプ【を行ぽむ\電話オぱぱべ〜 Mr. Wu went to Marvin Center and made a call.
5. 日本を行ぽむ勉強ぱべぞめび〜I want to go to Japan and study.
When the む-form indicates a means, a gerundival form is the most appropriate translation.
6. ベタΜはカら\ぜべァぱぞニΜリ【プ【オ使ぽむ\Εン【オ書でぱべ〜 Mr. Chen wrote a report using a new computer.
6 NP + オ+ verb of motion: a thing moves through an area or over a long distance When the particle オ is used with directional verbs such as 行でび, 帰アび, 来び, て アび, it marks the path of movement.
1. ぜよねだはむカオ 左ゅてぽむどぺはぞ〜 Please turn that intersection to the left.
2. 銀行よづゃオ 卯ゅてアぱべ〜
I turned the corner of the bank to the right.
3. ねよ道オ ぽびな行ぽむどぺはぞ〜 Please go straight on this street.
