3 Negative questions
Negative questions are used for a variety of reasons. The following two are used to ask about
a situation.
1. せやせんせいは、いませんか。 ‘Isn’t Professor Seya here?’
2. はなみせんせいは、きませんでしたか。 ‘Didn’t Hanami-sensei come?’
The following questions are used to suggest something rather politely.
3. はまのせんせいの にほんごは、はやくないですか。 ‘Isn’t Professor Hamano’s Japanese fast?’
4. それ、たかくなかったですか。 ‘Wasn’t that expensive?’
5. スミスさんは、アメリカじんじゃないですか。 ‘Isn’t Mr. Smith American?’
Negative questions are also used to invite someone to do something. See Lesson 6C for more.
6. これ(を)、たべませんか。 ‘Would you like to eat this?’
7. にほんご(を)、べんきょうしませんか。 ‘Why don’t you study Japanese?’
In the above examples, the object particle を is naturally dropped in conversation. See Lesson 7 for more on the object particle を.
