3 More on locational NP で
1. このかさは、デパートで かいました。
‘I bought this umbrella at a department store.’
NP で may be topicalized, or become the focus of contrast followed by は. 2. 今、にほんでは、雨です。
3. ワシントンでは、今日は、雨で、さむいでしょう。
4 Negative questions for invitations
Negative questions are often used to invite someone to do something.
1. かさ(を)、かいませんか。
‘Why don’t we buy an umbrella?’
2. これ(を)、たべませんか。
‘Would you like to eat this?’
3. にほんご(を)、べんきょうしませんか。
‘Would you like to study Japanese?’
In the above examples, the object particle を is dropped, which happens naturally in conversation. See Lesson 7 for more on the object particle を.
