Cultural Notes: Prefectures
Similar to “states” in the US, Japan has “prefectures” that are governmental bodies larger than cities and towns. There are 47 prefectures in Japan. Most of them are identified with the ending “-ken” as in Aomori-ken, Aichi-ken, and Okinawa-ken, except for Tokyo-to, Hokkaido, Osaka-fu, and Kyoto-fu. In Japanese, “prefectures” are thus called とどうふけん.
The famous city of Tokyo is the capital of Tokyo-to, and the historic city of Kyoto is the capital of Kyoto-fu. Kobe city, that is well-known for Kobe beef, is the capital of Hyogo-ken.
Can you identify the names of prefectures for the cities in the map on p.42?
