Cultural Note: Kanji, the origin of hiragana
Hiragana originated in the tradition of using kanji with Chinese sounds similar to Japanese syllables to represent Japanese syllables. Originally, they used original, squarely-shaped kanji for this purpose, but gradually, the tradition of using cursive styles of kanji developed, and their forms came to be conventionalized and fixed; thus present-day hiragana. Can you tell which hiragana the following kanji gave rise to?
加寸奴保女
For the answers, see the full list at the end of the hiragana practice section.
