Cultural Note: Common greetings
Although おはようございます, like “Good morning,” is heard everywhere, こんにち は and こんばんは are less frequently used; they are primarily used when visiting
someone at his/her home. When meeting a neighbor on the street, Japanese people are likely to use どちらまで “whereto?”. This question is not intended to be an intrusive one. If you do not want to tell exactly where you are going, you can simply answer it by saying ちょっと そこまで “just over there.”
