The period in question overlapped with the governorships of Mboweni and Marcus, both of whom had begun looking intently and intensely at bank supervision in the early 2000s. Equally significant is that Mboweni and Marcus were pathbreakers at the central bank, having been the first black person and woman respectively to lead the SARB.
Kahn worked under both leaders, as well as during Governor Kganyago’s first term.
“You must have a strong personality to be a Governor,” Kahn said. “All of them went through phases where the SARB came under severe attacks and criticism in different ways. But they strongly defended the SARB.”
