Charity
The Cayman islands
There are a lot of big-hearted people in Cayman who organise and participate in all manner of charitable events throughout the year, from dog-walking events to fun runs to gala dinners and even moustache-growing competitions! People here are always willing to give something of themselves as well as their wallet when it comes to worthy causes.
It would be impossible to cover all the great events and important charities supported, but here’s a few to give you a taste of just how important it is for the community to be able to give back.
Hatitude is a fun family brunch that takes place at Grand Old House each January and is a fund- raiser for the National Trust. Attendees ensure they are properly dressed for the occasion with amazing hat designs worn by all.
One of the highlights of the social calendar is the Breast Cancer Gala that takes place during October
Hollywood names to the event and last year it was the turn of American actress Shannen Doherty.
The Deputy Governor’s 5K Challenge is a fun run/walk held in April and raises thousands for charitable causes. Beneficiaries last year included Meals on Wheels, Feed Our Future, and the Kiwanis Club of Grand Cayman’s Buy a Kid Breakfast programme, which each received $28,000. $3,000 was raised from the Cayman Brac event and was donated to the Kirkconnell Community Care Centre for meals, while the $2,000 raised in Little Cayman
– designated Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The annual gala began in 2008 when Kim Lund and James Bovell of RE/MAX Cayman Islands decided to hold this important fundraiser. It was so successful the event now takes place every year, celebrating local breast cancer survivors and raising funds for local non-profit organisations – the Cayman Islands Cancer Society and the Lions Club of Tropical Gardens. They have managed to attract some big

Another charity which always garners huge support from
the community is the annual Hannah’s Heroes - The Big Shave event, where people are
encouraged to brave a shave for
kids with cancer. People from the community raise funds by getting their heads shaved
for an incredibly worthy cause - the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a volunteer-powered charity which funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organisation except the US government.
There are hundreds more events taking place throughout the year – Cayman is a really big hearted community that takes its charitable work very seriously indeed.
