THE POWER OF KINDNESS
VOLUNTEERS MAKE A DIFFERENCE
“The achievements of an organisation are the results of the combined efforts of each individual.” - Vince Lombardi
Our volunteers are at the heart of everything we do at
Te Omanga Hospice. The dedication and support from our team of volunteers ensures we can continue to provide our quality service, free of charge, to all those we care for. We are truly sustained by the aroha of our community.
Jenny volunteers every Thursday morning at reception. During the week, she knits teddy bears for our Family Support team to use in counselling sessions with children. Each bear has a unique expression, providing another way to express emotions. Jenny kindly makes three or four bears each week, along with some knitted hearts for our patients and whānau.
During the year, we profiled Jenny on the Te Omanga Hospice Facebook page. An astounding 146,500 people saw this post at least once!
We are deeply grateful to all our volunteers who generously share their talents and donate their time to our hospice.
Some of the roles volunteers help with are:
- Fundraising supporters - Retail shop assistants
- Gardeners
- Receptionists
- Housekeepers
- Kitchen helpers
- Floral arrangers
- Biographers
- Truck hand / Retail drivers
National Volunteer Week, held annually in June, is a special time for us to highlight the efforts of our incredible volunteers. This year, Suraj shared how volunteering at the Hospice has inspired him to start a career in nursing.

“I hope to pursue nursing study next year. Volunteering at the Hospice has given me the chance to create positive experiences and memories that not only can impact those we care for, but also ourselves. I would love to become a nurse at the Hospice one day.” - Suraj.
