times out of ten that tradesperson will head towards you and they become loyal to you.
A young guy applied for some work with us working for our biggest client. He was just starting out fresh in business. I had a chat to him as I do with young tradespeople starting out, and gave him a few start-up tips. He said, ‘I can only give you two days a week, as I’ve got this other work on.’
I said, ‘That’s fine, but what I’ll do is for the first six months I’ll pay you every 7 days, so that gives you a leg up. That way you know you have cash flow and we’ll see how we go from there.’ Well, within a few months he was working five to six days a week for us and we were paying him $20,000– $30,000 consistently per month.
Not bad for a new business and great money for someone starting out. It was a good leg up for him. The thing is, we needed more resource and he was a great prospect. We lured him by constant work and guaranteed payment.
After six months, we went to 20th of the month following terms and the young guy became a huge asset. He also had the risk mindset to scale up, which suited our workload enormously.
