THE POWER OF YOUR GENEROSITY
 FUNDRAISING
Te Omanga Hospice exists because of the
kindness and understanding of individuals and organisations in the community we serve. This year we needed to raise $5 million, which is approximately 45% of our funding needs to ensure our services continue, with our Fundraising and Retail teams focused on this task. The balance is provided through our contracts with Te Whatu Ora Health NZ to provide services to the Hutt Valley and Wairarapa communities.
For the first half of the year, the Fundraising & Communications team faced some challenges after several team members left to pursue new opportunities, and the team was left depleted of resources. Our colleagues graciously stepped up to fill the gaps as we took the opportunity to review, restructure, and recruit new members to the Fundraising & Communications team.
Since then, a largely new team has done a great job of working together to help raise the funds so necessary to keep the Hospice’s services free for people in
our community, and their families. Our thanks to everyone for their support of our new team as they continue to find their feet.
Throughout the past year, despite people in our community facing the challenges of the increasing cost of living, we have been overwhelmed with the ongoing support we received from our wonderful supporters. Donations to our appeals, Days of Care, our regular giving programme, along with bequests, events attendance, and gifts in kind, are just some of the ways our supporters helped to positively impact people’s lives.
We also continue to be well supported by grant providers, all committed to supporting those who need our crucial care. A generous grant from the Hutt City Council funded the replacement of one of our community team's vehicles, and between them, the Upper Hutt Council and the TG McCarthy Trust kindly funded the replacement of another vehicle for our community team. Other notable grants include the Lottery Grants Board with two years funding towards salaries, and the ANZ Staff Foundation that responded to our need for specialist bariatric equipment.
Grants from a range of private perpetual trusts continue to support Te Omanga Hospice either during an individual’s lifetime, or through their bequest. These perpetual trusts, where the benefactor’s money is invested for an indefinite period, and the investment income is distributed to the Hospice, helps us with our ongoing operational expenses.
We really do appreciate those who have had
the significant foresight to support us and our community in this way. A full list of grants that have been gratefully received, including perpetual grants, is included in our list of acknowledgements within this report.
We were also grateful to receive gifts in wills (bequests) from our supporters this year. These donations provide essential financial support to ensure future generations of people in the Hutt Valley will have access to free, compassionate end-of-life care and support.
It’s been fabulous to fully return to pre-pandemic times to hold Te Omanga Hospice’s fundraising events again. In February, our Golf Tournament saw an amazing $64,910 raised on the day, but once the final tally was done this grew to an incredible $68,646 raised for Te Omanga Hospice, the most successful tournament yet.
September 2022 saw our 14th annual Vintners’ Lunch take place with a Masquerade Mardi Gras theme. The event raised an amazing $216,000.
This year has also seen a return of the majority of the events that community groups and businesses hold for the sole purpose of making a difference to those the Hospice supports. We are very grateful for the amazing support of all those who run community events, or who help us with running our events.
Such incredible results are made possible through the support of our generous community, guests, volunteers and brilliant event committees.
The Garden of Appreciation in Petone continues to be a wonderful way for people to create a permanent tribute to a loved one, or commemorate a special memory, with an engraved brick. Each November,
a ceremony is held to lay the bricks and bless them, a special occasion for all those who have purchased a brick.
