“During the many discussions about naming the hospice
in 1979, our Founders Marion and Max Cooper, and Roy and Shirley McKenzie talked about the Māori approach to death, and their vision for a hospice that borrowed from Māori culture by involving the whole family in the natural process of death. A Māori name would reflect their vision. After consulting with a number of local people, including the Māori Studies Department at Victoria University, they decided on the name Te Omanga. The local translation is
“flying to a place of refuge”, which conveyed the sense of peace and acceptance they were looking for.”1
