NEEDHAMS POINT, SAINT MICHAEL, BARBADOS
This is a new development at Needhams Point in Barbados developed in light of the rich tradition of colonial architecture and urbanism throughout the West Indies. The buildings are organised in elongated blocks to allow sea views and enjoy the sea breeze for all. The new development draws know- ingly from the local character and traditions of shipwright techniques with tim- ber-framed and wood-clad structures. This stylistic tradition offers inspiration, a keen sense of proportion and human scale, a legacy of reliable construction, simplicity of detail and dignity in appearance. At the same time, the nature of an island environment suggests a relaxed formality and commensurate with its retreat atmosphere behind colourful louvres shutters and jalousies.
