The Greco-Roman villas have proven a most endur- ing and pleasurable residential type even with contempo- rary architectural principles. Their courtyard plan weaves seamlessly between interior and exterior spaces, and it also greatly improves and minimises circulation.
The primary design consideration is the additive nature of the villas. Their plan and massing are made of distinct organisational groupings that can be added to or amend- ed at any stage of the design without compromising the building’s composition as a whole. Such flexibility can also be extended to the construction stage and beyond.
Our next design consideration is achieving reproducibil- ity without compromising the “bespoke” character of the building, or how to take advantage of the efficiencies (cost and time) of repetition while avoiding cloning? The rela- tionship between type and variant of the type guarantees such bespoke character. Variation is achieved by axial or diagonal flipping of the plan, by mirroring, adding, subtract- ing. The relationship between type and variant can also vary the character of the building. By varying the materials of the external envelope, the same building can change character.
The landscaping proposals are very basic variations of simple paving patterns, seats, exedras, “chess planting”, grass steps, or assembled palm trees’ lofty crowns.
