BAB AL SALAM ROYAL PALACE, AMMAN, JORDAN
WARWICK ROAD, ROYAL BOROUGH KENSINGTON & CHELSEA, LONDON,UK, 2017
This royal residence straddles the crest of a wooded hillside enjoying magnificent views in all directions. The palace devel- ops in an additive manner and its form is largely governed by the requirements for privacy, providing views, natural ventilation and for modulating the strong sunlight of the region.
The local stone contrasts with the timber pergolas, mushar- abiyas, iwans and kiosks used traditionally for the passive con- trol of light, temperature and humidity. Much of the detailing has its origin in Islamic architecture, it is highly disciplined and in contrast to the smooth stone surfaces of the cubic volumes of the house. Ultimately the effect of the architecture is calm simplicity.
