About Belle Elegant
Considered by most industry experts to be one of the most successful American saddlebred show horses in history, Belle Elegant was World's 5-gaited Grand Champion in 1975 & 1977 and Reserve World Grand Champion in 1976 & 1978. Not only did this mare dominate the saddlebred circuit in the 1970’s, it was said by
her trainer, Ed Teater, to be “the most beautiful horse I ever saw.”
Even though Belle Elegant was truly a beautiful mare, evidently, she was extremely temperamental, often kicking the walls of her stall before a show as if to say “I’m not ready yet!” She also would not travel to competitions without “Babe”, a homely and dispassionate goat. “She’s so smart she thinks she has a human brain. She won’t
travel without that goat”, said Teater.
After winning six World's Championships, including the 1977 Five-Gaited World's Grand Championship, Belle Elegant produced World's Champion Elegant Sky, CH Pretty Persuasive, World's Champion CH Bahia Belle, and World's Champion
producing sire, CH El Cortez.
The Fairways of Ironhorse is proud to recognize this amazing
horse by naming our formal dining room after her. The Belle
Elegant fine dining restaurant will strive to match the quality
and excellence of this great champion.
World’s Grand Champion CHBelle Elegant, owned by North Ridge Farm, the mare that Hall of Famer Jack Nevitt trained up to her first “big stake” win at Louisville in 1975, has to account for many of his best moments
in the sport. “The two of us grew up together,” he’s said.
