A Living Chronicle: A Tapestry of People, Events and Institutions
patterns and trends that highlight the complex and rich history of naturopathic medicine and the profession’s emergence.
/ FACT VS INTERPRETATION:
The timeline is an international, multigenerational collaboration in gathering and recording objective data. Its entries have been compiled by historians, elders, leaders, scientists, students, clinical and academic colleagues and peers. As such, they are informed by differing perspectives, recollections and sources of information. Although some aspects of history are objective and can be presented as facts, in general those facts
also are contextualized through subjective interpretation by historians. Such interpretation can generate meanings that differ, depending on the lens through which events are perceived, clarified or not included. In light of the evidence, we aim to convey each relevant perspective as objectively as possible.
/ HOW THE PROFESSION’S CHRONICLE CAN BE CARRIED FORWARD:
The timeline serves as a dynamic tool for the profession and will chronicle and frame continued contributions using established inclusion criteria to evaluate the following features of each timeline entry: occurrence (i.e., “the first” publication or a publication which is a step on the pathway; function (i.e., codification of knowledge); subsequent “downstream” historical effect (inspiration, importance or influence), even if local or transient at the original time of occurrence.
/ THE PROFESSION’S GLOBAL HISTORY AND PRESENCE:
The historical and contemporary data illustrate the global history and distribution of the profession, with its concentration on North America (US and Canada), the United Kingdom, Australia, and other European predecessors as reflective of their historic occurrence. With data that has been made available to us to date, we have also included in this timeline activities, institutions, and people for naturopathic medicine in other countries and will continue to do so. You are invited to share international history and formation data with us as the timeline evolves, and as the World Naturopathic Federation (founded in 2014) expands and connects people and institutions in the current era.
/ THE STEPS AHEAD FOR NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE AND THE NATUROPATHIC PROFESSION IN FULLY ESTABLISHING THEMSELVES AS MATURE, INDEPENDENT AND SOCIALLY RECOGNIZED INSTITUTIONS.
By viewing the history of naturopathic medicine within the context of professional formation, we gain a deeper understanding of its patterns of emergence. Specificity concerning how far a profession
has traveled along these formative pathways and what milestones and benchmarks are ahead for
INCLUSION CRITERIA
Is the entry:
• Important or influential in the development of the naturopathic medical profession?
• a unique event, person or institution that shaped the profession? A first?
• part of a series of events, people and/ or organizations that collectively illustrate the pathway of emergence and maturation of a professional formation benchmark?
• one that meets or surpasses the weighted standard of inclusion across all entries?
