THE HISTORY
The court is just the beginning when it comes to battle. Portland Trailblazer Damian Lillard and Sacramento King Marvin Bagley lll recently exchanged “diss” tracks that set social media ablaze. While these young men have a much bigger platform thanks to streaming services and social media, the history of athletes as musicians began long ago.
In 1985, William “The Refrigerator" Perry represented the Chicago Bears on the rap track "The Super Bowl Shuffle," which eventually led to the release of his own track the "Refrigerator man. Darryl Strawberry got baseball in on the action releasing the track "Chocolate Strawberry" in 1986.
NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal dropped four albums in the 90s with" Shaq Diesel" earning the distinction of certified platinum. His legendary teammate Kobe Bryant released the rap album "K.O.B.E" further proving that dynamic talent sees no boundaries.
Even boxers got in the booth with Floyd Mayweather releasing "Yep" in 2007. Retired athletes including Deion Sanders, Roy Jones Jr, Metta World Peace, Allen Iverson, Charles Barkley, Jason Kidd, and so many more have all dabbled in music. Their feraless leap into another realm of entertainment paved the way for current players to take a shot at music including Cole Beasley, Le'Veon Bell, AJ Francis, Toree Thompson, Lonzo Ball, and more.
