  Changing Names
Congratulations! You have decided to marry and started making plans, and you may wish to consider a name change along with your marriage license application. The opportunity presents only at this moment. As you would also need to follow up with Social Security and the DMV to establish the name change, you can reconsider later by simply omitting these final steps.
Of the many options, you and your new spouse can hyphenate your last names in either order, such as Jackson-Chan or Chan-Jackson. You can
create a new last name by combining your last names or beginning or ending segments from your last names. Schubert and Miller can become Schubertmiller, Millerschubert, Milschubert, Schumiller, Schiller, Schuller, Schumille, Bertler, or Milbert. Just make one slash anywhere in your last name and keep either segment, which could be just a single letter.
Each of you can specify your desired change, if any, and they need not match. Middle names can also be changed to your new spouse’s surname, or you can keep your last name here if you will be taking your spouse’s last name. You can add one of your last names hyphenated to your middle name. If either of you had a different last name at birth, you can use it for any of these options. So, Scott Joseph Schubert, marrying Julian Oliver Miller, could choose Scott Miller Schubert, Scott Schubert Miller, Scott Joseph-Schubert Miller, Scott Joseph- Miller Schubert, Scott Joseph Schubertmiller, Scott Joseph Schiller, Scott Joseph Milbert, Scott Joseph Schubert-Miller, Scott Joseph Millerschubert, or Scott Joseph Miller-Schubert.
