  1,680-pound Rosetta Stone, part of the spoils of war, was one of the artifacts. Then, for the following two decades, linguists and scholars worked to translate the Egyptian writings, a task finally made possible because hieroglyphics bears some resemblance to the ancient Greek language.
Ownership of the Stone
Since 1802, the stone has sat in the famous British Museum in London. The museum has long proclaimed its interest in “world civilizations,” and its galleries
are filled with pilfered artifacts taken from their
native countries. The most famous example of British looting may be the panels Lord Elgin removed from the Parthenon in Athens in the early 1800s. To this day, the Greeks are demanding the return of the panels—dubbed the Elgin Marbles—that once sat above the columns of their beautiful temple.
Likewise, in 2003, the Egyptians asked the British Museum to return the Rosetta Stone and other artifacts pilfered from their Middle Eastern country. The British, however, had procured an agreement, signed long ago by the grateful Ottomans, giving the British all antiquities plundered by the defeated French. The genuine Rosetta Stone, called “one of the most visited objects in its collections,” once sat at the entry of the British Museum. For the past two decades, however, it has been protected by an enclosed glass case. Visitors can no longer mind-travel their fingers across the surface of the stone. It is the priceless artifact that saved the long-lost hieroglyphics language and breathed life into Egypt’s ancient history.
