six of those missions landing on the moon. Apollo 13 aborted after an explosion enroute to the moon, but with incredible ingenuity and luck, it returned safely to Earth.
After Apollo 11, the interest in manned space flight waned. The NASA budget was dramatically reduced with several missions being canceled. A few remaining Saturn V rockets became museum displays, and in 1973, the third stage section was converted to be used as the Skylab space station.
Of the 363 feet of total rocket, only twelve feet would return with the astronauts. The remainder of the Saturn stages splashed into the Atlantic or burned up falling back to earth, yet it is still the most powerful rocket ever built.
As for Wernher von Braun, he remained director of the Marshall Space Flight Center until 1970, then moved to NASA headquarters for a few years, and finally retired with many awards and honors. Many of the German scientists and engineers continued to work on numerous NASA programs and made significant contributions to the American space program.
With Apollo 15, the powerful Saturn 5 rocket was lifting the additional weight of a Lunar Rover on a trajectory toward the moon.
In eight short years, the US developed from scratch a rocket system and lunar vehicles to get two astronauts to the moon and back, meeting President Kennedy’s deadline, a remarkable feat of commitment and engineering. L
