Sorority History Today, there are more than fifty chapters, with an approximate membership of over nine hundred stretching across the width and breath of our country representing thirty- one states, the District of Columbia, and the Virgin Islands, however, not all chapters nor all Sorors are still active. The Sorority is recognized as (1) an important national organization which stimulates young women to qualify for the many challenges offered by increased employment opportunities; (2) an organization of competent women holding prominent positions in, or operating businesses that are satisfying and invaluable to community progress; and (3) an organization whose members have a major interest in the total economic and cultural progress of all women and youth. From the birth of Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc., “Business” has been in the focus of al activities. Now is the time to move forward-a time when daily economic changes and challenges are part of the operation of every enterprise a time when clearer understanding of business and management is important to all. One can choose from a vast number of business fields: Accounting, Business Law, Construction, Entertainment, Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Marketing, Human Resources Development, and Risk Management. There are hundreds of activities that fall into this category and may be helpful when considering the educational background and careers of prospective members. Today, 90 years later, our country once again faces tough economic times, recalling that devastating era in our nation’s collective history. Now, like then, as people of color, the hardships hit our communities the hardest, and it is clear that Iota Phi Lambda Sorority’s mission, purpose and goals are more vital now than ever. We support and encourage business and professional women who can help pave the way and open desperately needed opportunities for others — and we will do more. We promote interest in and awareness of business and entrepreneurship among girls and young women through programs and scholarships — and we will do more. We offer opportunities for leadership development for youth and avenues for building leadership expertise for our thousands of members across the country and in the U.S. Virgin Islands — and we will do more. Under the theme of “Business and Professional Women Building the Foundation for Generational Financial Empowerment,” Iota women will continue to move upward and onward. The goals of this administration will focus on accountability, membership, communication, technology, positive change and global connections: a vision for Iota’s future that embraces the vision of our founder, ever seeking to realize and even reach beyond her greatest dreams for this great sorority.
