In 1985, Wayne & Sue Parkerson made the decision to homeschool their son, Tyler. This was no easy decision, as they faced much opposition to their choice. This decision not only saved their son's life in every way imaginable - physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually, but also sparked a fire in their older son, David. After seeing the success and confidence Tyler gained through homeschooling, Sue began actively working with the Memphis homeschool community, working full time for Gateway Christian Schools as a Senior High guidance counselor in the total home education department.
On December 25, 1997, Sue Parkerson went home to be with the Lord. Sue was a phenomenal woman of God who left her legacy not only with her sons David (President & Founder of HLA) and Tyler (HLA Director of Information) but also with the entire Memphis homeschooling community. She lived out her remaining days in this world helping homeschoolers, and was instrumental in helping shape the Memphis-Area Home Education Association in its early days. After her death, MHEA set up a scholarship program to keep her memory alive and to continue her work in homeschooling. This scholarship is sponsored by HomeLife Academy, but also receives donations from MHEA members.
