Bridging the paternal gap in 009
n BY NICK SWEDBERG
From tug of war to inspirational sto- ries for young men, community events put on by the 9th District CAPS office brought together hundreds of children and adults in June. Officers from the Deering-based district held a pre-Fa- ther’s Day event, played local children in dodgeball and volleyball, taught wa- ter safety tips and hosted an outing to a women’s professional basketball game.
“Because of the misconception about the police, we are trying to bridge the gap and interact with kids so they can feel better about the police,” said 9th District Officer Sabrina King.
On June 16, nearly 250 people attend- ed the luncheon for Father’s Day at Mc- Guane Park, King said. Police, elected of- ficials and community members offered encouraging and inspiring messages for the approximately 125 boys and men who attended. This was the first-ever event centered on Father’s Day for the district.
“We already do a Mother’s Day lun- cheon,” King said. “We never ever do a Father’s Day.” Some of the inspirational speeches were given by reformed crim- inals who described their violent pasts and how they have turned their lives around, she said. Everyone in attendance received a hat, shirt and tie donated by World Vision and I Am a Gentleman, Inc., a Chicago-based nonprofit, King said.
Students also received a lesson in June in how to be safe around water through an intensive water safety camp. The camp is hosted in partnership with the Valentine Boys & Girls Club and is spon- sored by the ZAC Foundation, whose mission is to teach about water safety. More than 200 students attended during the camp, which ran June 25-28.
Basketball fans in the district also en- joyed the chance to see the Chicago Sky WNBA team play at home. For every home game, the Sky donates CPD tick- ets so that they can bring groups of local children, King said. d
