Detective Marco Acevedo added to his medal collection last month as he earned a silver medal in the long jump at the 2018 U.S. Police & Fire Championships.
Held in San Diego, the bi-annual competition features 54 dif- ferent athletic events ranging from Olympic sports – such as track and field and swimming – to horseshoes, cornhole and surfing.
Acevedo, competing in the 45-49 age group, landed a jump of 4.49 meters (just under 14 feet 9 inches) to reach the podium. He also ran in the 100-meter sprint, finishing fifth with a time of 13.7 seconds.
“Not my day, but represented CPD,” Acevedo said, noting he’s picked up four silvers and one bronze in the U.S. championships and World Police & Fire Games in recent years, despite being a relative novice to track and field.
After picking up the World Games silver in baseball in 2015 as a member of a North Carolina-based team, Acevedo first ven- tured into individual competition at the 2016 U.S. champion- ships, where he grabbed silvers in the 100 meter (13.07) and long jump (4.79 meters).
At the 2017 Worlds, Acevedo took third in the 100 meter by posting a time of 13.22 seconds against what he called an expe- rienced seven-man field filled with track stars and professional runners. He placed fifth in the long jump despite landing his best ever attempt of 4.89 meters, which is just shy of 16 feet.
Acevedo previously said he was considering trying to enter the 2019 World Games in China if he can find sponsorships. d
