The quick response by Officers Jose San- chez and Tone Trujillo to a call of an unre- sponsive 3-year-old child prevented what could have been a trag- ic situation.
Breathing new life
The officers arrived at the home in the Aus- tin neighborhood during the morning hours of Oct. 20, 2016, to find the boy not breathing and without a pulse on the living room floor. Nearby, his mother and grand- mother were hysterical with panic, but the mother was able to tell Sanchez and Trujillo the boy had ingested either a pesticide or a prescription of the medication
Norco.
Thinking and acting quickly, Sanchez requested Chi-
cago Fire Department medics to the scene, while Trujil- lo – trusting his training and his fatherly instincts – be- gan to perform CPR. The compressions were successful in restoring the boy’s pulse, and he started to breathe again. Medics transported the youngster to a nearby hospital, where he was reported to have begun “acting
like a normal child,” not long after the frightening inci- dent.
The officers prevented the loss of a young life by knowing exactly what to do in the moment, and per- forming actions that certainly were appreciated by the boy’s family.
It is with great appreciation and pride that the Fra- ternal Order of Police, Chicago Lodge 7, presents Of- ficer Tone Trujillo and Officer Jose Sanchez with Live- saving Awards. d
