14th District officers make special delivery
Two officers in 014 were in the right place at the right time on April 6, when they helped welcome a new life into the world.
Officer Lizzette Lozada and Probation- ary Officer Hoong Giang, who cover the midnight shift, had just finished meeting with their sergeant when they received a report from dispatch of a woman in labor inside a car pulled over on Kedzie Boule- vard near West North Avenue.
After racing to the scene, their 4:30 a.m. arrival was followed by a newborn baby girl less than a minute later, accord- ing to Chicago Police spokesperson Kel- lie Bartoli.
“By the time we got to her, the baby came out, landed in my arms and I hand- ed her back to her mother,” Giang said.
Lozada recalled just how quickly the delivery occurred. She briefly stepped away to retrieve a blanket from the police cruiser to swaddle the baby.
“When I came back, he had the baby in his hands,” explained Lozada, who has been with the force since August 2018.
Giang, who joined the department in October 2019 fresh from the police acad-
emy, said he has been “learning so much, so quick” over the past year-and-a-half on the job.
“Things are happening so fast, and then to have situations like this happen,
it’s a blessing,” added Giang.
Following the delivery, the 24-year-old
mother and her baby, both in good con- dition, were taken to St. Mary’s Hospital, according to Bartoli.
