“I don’t think I ever had a really bad day,” Patrolman Ralph LaPorte rem-

inisced about his 22-year career with the CPD. “I used to look forward to

going back to work after days off. I really liked what I was doing; it was a

blast.”
Working the subway detail downtown and city-wide, he protected out-

officers riding with the Department’s motorcycle force, LaPorte escorted a
of-towners against the perils of pickpockets, and in six years as one of 10

“I’ve always been a biker,” he commented, and as director of the

American Lawmen Motorcycle Club - Chicago, the 55-year-old will lead the

group’s efforts to raise funds on behalf of regional charities.

December’s Toys for Tots event is always memorable, when club

members saddle up their bikes and deliver presents to needy children.

“It’s amazing, but it’s not just the kids who get a kick out of it,” he said. “It’s
a great feeling.”

The not-for-profit brotherhood includes active and retired police officers

who own and operate Harleys and who are focused on doing good deeds in

their communities. The group is big on collaborative spirit and “we try to

send a few guys to every other club’s events,” LaPorte said.
