‘Phoenix Rising’ event benefits CPD fallen officers
FATHER DAN BRANDT’S CORNER
Thanks to all who attended the New Year’s Day police prayer serv- ice at the FOP Hall. It was a perfect opportunity to close out 2015 and renew hope for a more peaceful 2016. At the service, we remembered
the 129 law enforcement officers
nationwide who died in the line of
duty in 2015. Sadly, that number is
up from 118 the year before. The
Pipes and Drums of the Emerald
Society, pictured here, supplied the
music, and our gracious hosts at FOP provided a full bar and great food following the service.
Ash Wednesday is Feb. 10. In time-honored tradition, department chaplains will distribute blessed ashes at various police facilities throughout the City. The schedule is posted in the daily bulletin and on our Web site’s home page.
From 6-11 p.m., Feb. 18, the CPD Survivors will host their third annual “Phoenix Rising” event at FOP Hall. Come check out the many resources offered to department members and support the Survivors, who continue to help officers involved in critical incidents. Food, beverages, live music and fun for all. For more information, please visit www.ChicagoPoliceSurvivors.com.
On Feb. 21, Alderman Matt O’Shea will host a pancake breakfast fundraiser for the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation’s “Get Behind the Vest” initiative. It will be held from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at St. John Fisher School (10200 South Washtenaw). Donation for unlimited pancakes is $5 per person or $25 per family. I will celebrate the 10 a.m. Mass at St. John Fisher that morning, and that Mass will be dedicated to the 574 CPD officers who have died in the line of duty.

“It is simple,” said the Lord. “It requires but one skill. You see, they have learned to feed each other, while the greedy think only of them- selves. A friend is someone who reaches for your hand and touches your heart.”
I have heard it said, “True friends must always hold hands,” but in reality, true friends don’t need to hold hands because they know the hand of a friend will always be there.
On behalf of all your chaplains, thanks for the holy and noble work
on Feb. 29 in the north atrium of the academy. Date night will include pizza, popcorn and refreshments. This is a free event. For more information, please contact Chaplain Kim- berly Lewis-Davis at 312-771-6638. RSVP by Feb. 15. Fireproof your marriage... and never leave your partner behind!
