The power of teamwork and training
The all-hands-on-deck contribution to the Chicago Police crowd control prowess being so world class – or World Series Class – manifested in so many ways, includ- ing nearly the entire third shift from the Third District working the Wrigleyville detail. Like other districts that sent third-shift officers, kudos went out to colleagues from the other shifts who also worked the extra hours to maintain vigil throughout the City.
Kelly Cusack, one of nearly 100 Third District Officers assigned to the World Series – and no relation to noted Cubs fan John, also an actor – voiced the perspective that most of those working this marathon detail brought to this job.
“It’s a long shift, but we’re used to this kind of stuff,” she stated. “And we’re talking a piece of history here.”
The confidence the Chicago Police brought to Wrig- leyville secured the streets and assured the area’s repu- tation as the “Friendly Confines.” Planning, training and lessons learned from securing big events like the NATO Summit in 2012 bred much of the primarily incident-free experience during World Series Weekend.
Third District Officer Joseph Bokuniewicz exemplified the simple-but-focused intensity the police exhibited on this job. He received a memo about the assignment the day before Game 3, reported to Soldier Field for the roll call and was trusted with patrolling the area at Sheffield and Waveland where the Fox Television set was located.
O cers from the Third District were proud to contribute to the expertise Chicago Police used to make the World Series detail so successful.
“It’s pretty busy right down in the heart of it, but it’s making sure people are doing what they are supposed to be doing and not running and jumping on the set,” Bokuniewicz explained.
Also he noted how officers were well prepared for that and more.
“We do a lot of training for crowd control with videos and classes we take and stuff. And we do a lot of prac- tice,” he added. “I think the training we got from NATO was a good experience for a lot of people. Anyone that went to the training had good experience for something like this. d
