October Officer Awards
Police Officer Sean Hayes, Star #7012
Officer Sean Hayes was off from work on July 3 when he was taking his son to a local farmers’ market near the corner of Roscoe Street and Damen Avenue. As he ap- proached a stop sign, he noticed a civilian getting up from the ground,
a bicycle with wheels spinning on the ground and a Honda with the driver’s door folded completely forward.
The cyclist was holding his neck and obviously in shock. Hayes approached the cyclist and asked if he was OK. The rider removed his hand from his neck and Hayes was able to clearly see his trachea through a huge puncture wound right above his collar bone.
Hayes calmly sprang into action and assisted the cyclist to sit safely in the grass, out of harm’s way. He then positioned his truck to block traffic and searched his truck, hoping to find anything that might save the citizen’s life. As luck would have it, Hayes found a few OLAES bandages. He applied the pressure bandage to the injured citizen.
At this time, the driver of the “at-fault” vehicle came out of her apartment and began screaming that the cyclist was going to die. Wanting to calm the woman before she caused the cyclist to panic, Hayes quickly gave her another OLAES bandage and asked her to go inside and open it for him. OLEAS bandages packaging can be very difficult to open, and the woman calmed down as soon as she had something to concentrate on that might help the cyclist.
The Chicago Fire Department arrived about 10 to 12 minutes later, and relocated the injured cy- clist to Illinois Masonic Hospital. Hayes and his son, who waited and watched his father save a life, visited John (the cyclist) recently, and admired the eight-inch scar at his collar line.
Hayes acknowledged the fact that Sergeant Ralph Cruz and Officer Brian Berkowitz created the pro- gram that gave him the knowledge to save this civil- ian’s life. Hayes proved to be an excellent student.
It is with great appreciation that the Fraternal Order of Police, Chicago Lodge #7, presents Offi- cer Sean Hayes with a Life Saving Award. d
