Honoring a Hero
When the call finally came, it was a dream come true, and not just the dream of becoming a Chicago Police Officer. Sam and Crystal finally were able to get married in December 2017. They finally moved into a house, which enabled them to adopt another child from a member of their family.
Nothing was bigger to Sam than his family, and being their hero certainly inspired him to serve heroically from the mo- ment he came on the Department.
“When he spoke about his amazing wife, Crystal, just the sound of his mentioning her name spoke volumes,” Villegas shared. “His eyes would light up anytime you asked about his lovely kids. His family was his driving force. No doubt about that. Everything he did was with them in mind. Every deci- sion, big or small, he wanted to share that with them.”
For all the attributes that blend to define heroism, one seems to run deep in all Chicago Police Officers, especially when policing in the current landscape. Jimenez exhibited that quality at a young age, and it always made him proud to serve, proud to serve with a smile.
It was this attribute Johnson praised at the funeral Mass with a message just for Crystal.
“Maybe it was his upbringing that made him who he was. Or maybe it was the nurturing of his loving wife, Crystal, and his beautiful children,” the superintendent commented. “And remember when your first child was on the way? Sam stepped up when most young men his age would have been packing
