him in the face. The elderly man fell backward, striking his head on the pavement.
Bazarek — along with other nearby citizens, including a Cook County Sheriff’s deputy — went to help the elder- ly man. After an ambulance had been called for the man, Bazarek got in his vehicle and trailed the suspect, called 911 and offered a description of the offender. Minutes later, as other officers responded to the area of 26th and LaSalle streets, Bazarek pulled in front of the suspect to block his path and made the arrest.
The suspect, a felon previously convicted of attempted murder, faces multiple counts of aggravated battery. Of- ficials praised Bazarek for taking a career criminal off the streets. The elderly victim was taken to the hospital, where he remained in intensive care for many days.
“He is a great example of police work as a passion and calling, and we are proud to honor him as our November Officer of the Month,” said CPMF Executive Director Phil Cline during a ceremony for Bazarek.
Bazarek comes from a police family, with his father, an uncle and brother having served the Chicago Police De- partment in different roles for a century combined. Bazarek himself faces retirement in February, after 28 years on the job.
