Officers Ryan Krolikowski and Eric Wicencyjusz were working in the Seventh District on Dec. 7, 2015, when they observed a vehicle travelling westbound on Garfield Boulevard at a high rate of speed. The vehicle then sped out of control, crashed into a light pole and flipped vi- olently into the air, landing on the sidewalk.
The officers immediately re- quested assistance over zone six radio. In response to their
call for assistance, Sergeant Michael Cavanaugh and Officers Mi-
chael Bunyon, Ivan Romo and Michael Guzman arrived on scene
to administer aid. As flames and heavy smoke engulfed the driver’s
compartment, Krolikowski and Wicencyjusz removed the uncon-
scious driver, who had suffered a broken femur during the collision.
As the fire quickly accelerated, the deployed airbags rendered visi-
bility inside the vehicle impossible, so Cavanaugh instructed the officers to cut the airbags in an effort to help find any other victims. A second unconscious victim was located in the back seat, but due to the crash, the door was forced shut. In a team effort, the officers pulled open the rear door, removed the second victim and located a third unconscious victim.
When Bunyon realized the third victim was buckled in, Krolikowski reached in and cut the seat belt. Bunyon pulled the victim out of the vehicle and Romo, Guzman, Krolikowski and Cavanaugh assisted in dragging the victim a safe distance away. CFD arrived on scene, extinguished the fire and transported the victims to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital. All three victims suffered smoke inhalation and burns, but are expected to make a full recov- ery as a result of the fine efforts of all involved CPD members.
It is with great appreciation that the Fraternal Order of Police Chicago Lodge 7 presents Officers Ryan Kro- likowski, Eric Wicencyjusz, Michael Bunyon, Ivan Romo, Michael Guzman and Sergeant Michael Cavanaugh with Lifesaving Awards. d
Officer Suzette Foster, Star 10227
Officer Suzette Foster was in the radio room in the Second District when a car pulled in front of the police station on Jan. 16. Gunshot victim Maurice Warren limped inside the sta- tion and collapsed on the floor, bleeding pro- fusely from his left thigh.
Rushing to his aid, Foster quickly grabbed a metal bar and fashioned a tourniquet for his wound. She calmly took control of the situ- ation, keeping Warren conscious until CFD arrived.
According to a doctor at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital, Foster’s poise, quick-thinking and medical intervention saved Warren’s life, despite his suffering extensive in-
juries that required complex surgery.
It is with great appreciation that the Fraternal Order of Police Chicago Lodge 7 presents Officer Suzette Foster with the Lifesaving Award. d
